Public More Aware
PUBLIC awareness of dyslexia is growing, dyslexia consultant and author of many books on the subject, Christina Alexander says.
For many years, Ms Alexander found that children were written off as "slow" because they could not achieve learning skills as readily as their classmates.
Worse still, nothing was done to help them largely due to ignorance on the part of parents and teachers in recognising the cause of the apparent "slowness".
Today, classic signs of dyslexia are recognised.
"It is high time people (of all ages) with dyslexia faced up to their problems and stopped feeling threatened or embarrassed about being called dummies or just plain stupid," Ms Alexander said.
"So much can be done to help including improvement in reading and spelling as well as self esteem."
