Outlines of the letters are felt – tactile and kinesthetic - as they are seen and heard. This method was used by the ancient Romans using styluses and incised marble tablets. In the 20th century clinician- teachers Montessori (Italy) and Fernald (UCLA) et al revived it using cheaper, blackboards, chalk, pen and paper- and fingertips!.
